1. Material Types:

   • Merino Wool: A natural fiber that is highly breathable, moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating. Merino wool also has odor-resistant properties, making it great for multi-day use.

   • Synthetic Fabrics (Polyester, Nylon, etc.): These are lightweight, moisture-wicking, and dry quickly, making them popular for high-intensity activities. They tend to be less expensive than merino wool.

   • Silk: Lighter and softer than other materials, but not as effective at moisture-wicking or insulating in extreme conditions.

2. Purpose/Functionality:

   • Midweight: Ideal for colder temperatures or moderate activity.

   • Heavyweight: Provides the most warmth for low-intensity, cold-weather activities.

4. Fit: Base layers are typically designed to fit snugly against the skin to efficiently wick away moisture and retain warmth.

When choosing a base layer, consider factors such as the weather, activity level, and how long you’ll be outside. Proper layering with other clothing items like insulation layers and outerwear will help keep you comfortable across a range of conditions.
